HORSERADISH ARMORACIA RUSTICANA (COCULEARIA ARMORACIA) The bruised root laid to the part affected with sciatica, joint-ache or the hard swellings of the liver and spleen, helps them all. The leaves appear before winter and grow to about eighteen inches (46 cm). A second crop of leaves follow, which are rougher, broader and taller. The root is large and white with a taste like mustard. Where to find it: A cultivated plant, but is found wild in rnoist and shady places. Flowering time: Midsummer. Astrology: It is under Mars. Medicinal virtues: The juice of the root, when drank, is effectual for the scurvy. Given to children to drink, it kills worms. The distilled water of the herb and root is taken with a little sugar for sciatica. Modern uses: A digestive stimulant, it is added to food as a vinegar or sauce. An infusion of the root ~ 1/2 oz (15 g) to 1 Pt (568 mI) of boiling water - is given in doses of 2 fl oz (56 ml) for its strong diuretic properties, which are of value in dropsy. This is also suitable for rheumatism and gout. |
