| MADDER RUBIA TINCTORUM The leaves and roots beaten and applied to any part that is discoloured with freckles, morphew, white scurf or any such deformity of the skin, cleanses thoroughly and takes them away. It has thick roots, weak stems which often lie on the ground, and long spikes of yellow flowers, which are followed by small moist black berries. Where to find it: A cultivated plant, it produces red and yellow dyes, but is a native of the warmer Mediterranean countries. Flowering time: Midsummer. Astrology: It is a herb of Mars. Medicinal virtues: The roots have a weak, bitterish astringent taste. A strong decoction is diuretic and good for obstructions of the visceral organs, dispersing congealed blood and the dropsy and curing the jaundice. It cleanses the kidneys and urinary organs of stone and gravel and cases the sciatica. It is effectual for bruises both inward and outward. A decoction of the leaves makes a good fomentation to bring down the courses. Modern uses: Not much used medicinally, although the roots, leaves and seeds have a reputation for improving the menstrual flow and for liver complaints. The powdered herb is taken in doses Of 10-30 grains (.65- 1.9g). |
