| MAPLE TREE ACER The decoction of the leaves or bark strengthens the liver. There are many varieties of this tree, including the American Sugar Maple which provides an excellent syrup. Where to find it: It grows in hedgerows and in gentlemen's gardens. Flowering time: It blossoms from early to late spring. Astrology: It is under the dominion of Jupiter. Medicinal virtues: A decoction of the leaves or bark opens obstructions of the liver and spleen and eases pains from them. The larger Maple, if tapped, yields a considerable quantity of liquor, of a sweet and pleasant taste, which may be made into wine. The wood boiled as sugar-cane leaves a powder hardly to be distinguished from sugar. Modern uses: The bark of the Red Maple is astringent and a decoction of it is used as a lotion for sore eyes. Maple syrup is regarded as a 'health' food and is available from health stores. It can be used as a substitute for sugar. |
