A specific against the pain and swelling of the haemorrhoids or piles.
Black or Dark Mullein resembles White Mullein, but is smaller and lacks the white downy covering.
Where to find it: Grassy banks, hedgerows and roadsides, but is not so commonly found as White Mullein.
Flowering time: Midsummer.
Astrology. A saturnine plant.
Medicinal virtues: The leaves are used and are accounted a good pectoral agent, particularly for coughs and the spitting of blood. They are likewise good for colicky pains and griping in the abdomen. Fomentations are used outwardly for the piles.
Modern uses: This and the White are considered to have very similar properties and that which is most easily obtainable is used. It may be mixed with other remedies for lung disorders, such as Colt's Foot, Lungwort and Horehound, according to the specific condition being treated.
