It opens stoppings of the liver and spleen, and wastes the hardness thereof.
An annual, growing with one upright, thick and almost transparent stalk, about a foot (30 cm) high. The stem produces swollen and fleshy leaves. The flowers are greenish-yellow, but insignificant.
Where to find it: On sandy shores at the coast.
Flowering time: Summer
Astrology. Under the dominion of Mars.
Medicinal virtues: The powder or the juice, taken in drink, purges downwards and is effectual for the dropsy, to provoke urine, and to expel the dead child. It must be used with discretion as a great quantity is hurtful and dangerous.
Modern uses: The juice has diuretic properties, but is rarely used in medicine. Its main use has been in the manufacture of soap and glass.
