SHEPHERD'S ROD  DIPSACUS PILOSUS


Good against obstructions of the liver, and the jaundice.
A biennial, also known as Small Teasel. The lower leaves are large and rough, whereas the upper are attractive and deeply serrated. The flowers are a pale yellow and are followed by prickly heads of green and purple.
Where to find it: Damp woodland, ditches and hedgerows.
Flowering time: Late summer.
Astrology: It is a plant of Mars.
Medicinal virtues: The root is bitter and, given in strong infusion, it strengthens the stomach and creates an appetite. It is also a liver tonic.
Modern uses: It is not much used because it is not often found, growing only in scattered areas. The Common Teasel has similar virtues. See Teasel.
