The distilled water cleanses the skin of all discolourings, as morphew, sunburns, pimples and freckles.
A perennial related to the Dandelion, growing to about three feet (90 cm) high with large, bright yellow flowers. The leaves are winged.
Where to find it: Most frequently found on high ground, in dry pastures and in hedgerows. Flowering time: Mid to late summer.
Astrology: This is under Venus.
Medicinal virtues: It is an agreeable bitter, a carminative and a destroyer of worms. The powder of the flowers is taken night and morning in doses of six to twelve grains (390-780 mg). The leaves are astringent and vulnerary and will stop all kinds of fluxes. The powdered herb is taken in distilled water for the whites in women. Boiled in water and drank it eases the griping pains of the bowels and is good for the sciatica and aching joints. The same boiled in vinegar, with honey and Alum, and gargled, eases toothache and helps sore gums.
Modern uses: It is used for expelling worms in children. An infusion of the dried herb - 1 oz (30 g) to 1 Pt (568 mi) of boiling water - is taken night and morning on an empty stomach, in teacupful doses. It promotes menstruation and, for this, the infusion is given in doses Of 2 fl OZ (56 ml), three times a day before food. It should not he taken in pregnancy. The dried flowers and seeds are a useful remedy for gout. Infuse half a teaspoonful in hot water for each dose.
