SOW-THISTLE (Common)
SONCHUS OLERACEUS
Goodfor the gravel and stoppage of urine.
A well-known perennial weed growing up to three feet (9 i cm) high with a hollow
stem and branches, full of milky juice. The numerous flowers are a pale lemon. Also known
as the Smooth Sow-thistle.
Where to find it: A robust weed found in gardens and waste ground. Flowering
time: Summer.
Astrology: This is under Venus.
Medical virtues: It is cooling and good against obstructions. The young tops can be
eaten in salad with oil and vinegar to case the pain from scalding urine. The leaves act
like Dandelion and are good for sediment in the bladder and retention of urine.
Modern uses: Seldom used, except as a food for rabbits. The young leaves may be
eaten in salads. For inflammatory swellings, the leaves can be used in a poultice.
Dandelion, which has similar properties, is more commonly used in modern practice.
